Hurra for deg

Hurra for deg er den tradisjonelle bursdagssangen (birthday song) i Norge. Den synges i bursdager for både barn og voksne. Ofte går vi rundt i ring, imens vi synger og gjør bevegelser (movements) som teksten beskriver.

Februar 2026

It is still the beginning of a new year (nytt år), and here in Australia have we just finished our summer holiday (sommerferie). I started writing this Norwegian blog in October 2024 and you can find 15 blogs here on my webside to help you learn more about Norway (Norge) and the Norwegian language (norsk språk). Most blogs are written in both Norwegian and English, some in Norwegian with support language in English, others mainly in English but with useful Norwegian terminology.

Frangipani - en del av australsk sommer

Sommer og jul

Det er første desember og sommer her i Australia. Jeg liker de lange, lyse kveldene og tidlige morgenbad. Min første julaften i Australia var på stranda (the beach) i Byron Bay, og senere ble det mange år i Sydney med familielunsjer på første juledag.

November i Norge

November er en stille (quiet) måned i Norge, og ofte kan det være både mørkt og vått (dark and wet). Men det er også en måned som kan by på (offer) full vinter og skiføre, og utover i november kommer julegater og julelys, julemarkeder og julekonserter — Christmas streets, Christmas light displays, Christmas markets and Christmas concerts. I denne bloggen får du både musikk og oppskrifter, music and recipes.

Why Norwegian has two written languages and so many dialects

Ever wondered why Norwegians have so many variations for the word “not”?

From Viking runes to Danish rule, and from Ivar Aasen’s language revolution to modern Bokmål, Norwegian has a fascinating linguistic history.

Learn how the language evolved, why Norway has two official written standards, and how you can learn Bokmål that will help you communicate anywhere in the country — dialects and all.

17th of May - Norway's National Day.

Why is 17th of May the best day for language students? Because “Hurra!” is the only word you need to say all day! Oh well,  - you may need a few more words. “Gratulerer med dagen” is a common greeting among Norwegian people on the day and “Hipp, hipp, HURRA” is the cheering you will hear from kids, and adults, in the parades and throughout the whole day.

Testimonials

"Lene makes an effort to tailor the lessons to each students interests and level of skill. Once I went to Norway and spoke with the locals I had many compliments on the quality of my Norwegian. This is without a doubt thanks to Lene's encouragement and expertise as a tutor. I strongly recommend her for anyone who would like to learn Norwegian." Lachlan , August 2022.

"Lene Skaug helped me out with a government accepted translation of my Norwegian birth certificate. Her work has enabled me to use this document in official dealings with the Australian Government. Lene is professional, expedient & most importantly, friendly and approachable.
A very positive experience. Thank you, Lene”
Hans, Perth, WA,  2021.

"Lene has a fantastic approach to teaching and provides unlimited resources to keep me interested, motivated and continually improving with Norwegian. I live here in Norway she works hard both during the lesson and behind the scenes to provide a tailored and flexible class structure during our Skype lessons. I have had a handful of different Norwegian teachers in Australia and in Norway (both in person and via Skype) and Lene continues to produce the most affordable and superior service I have experienced. Takk Lene!!"  Rachel (28), March 2022.

'I began language lessons with Lene in July of 2021 after my wife and I decided we wanted to move to Norway in 2022. In the seven months between beginning lessons and relocating to Oslo, I feel I've been able to attain a good grasp of basic conversational Norwegian, and a firm understanding of the grammar. Lene explains things in an extremely clear and thorough manner, is happy to work at my pace, and is always available to answer questions and clarify difficulties I may be having. Coming originally from Norway, Lene has also provided many invaluable pieces of advice regarding culture and customs, which has made my transition to life here in Oslo much easier. I highly recommend her if you are looking to learn Norwegian!' Wade, March 2022.
