It is still the beginning of a new year (nytt år), and here in Australia have we just finished our summer holiday (sommerferie). I started writing this Norwegian blog in October 2024 and you can find 15 blogs here on my webside to help you learn more about Norway (Norge) and the Norwegian language (norsk språk). Most blogs are written in both Norwegian and English, some in Norwegian with support language in English, others mainly in English but with useful Norwegian terminology.
Thinking ahead: What do I want to achieve this year?
February is a good time to plan ahead and think about what we would like to focus on and achieve this year. And maybe how to go about your language studies is one of things YOU want to focus on in 2026. What do you want to do to enjoy and improve your Norwegian skills further? I still believe a good text book with fundamental grammar explanations easy available and a note book where I can take notes or write down new vocabulary when watching YouTube videos or news for example is a great foundation. However, these are just two ingridents I find very useful, and as you all know there are so many resources out there - and in this blog I will introduce a few more of my favourite online resources for learning Norwegian.
Progress, not perfection
A few days ago, I heard one of the expert trainers on the Muster Dogs show say to the new trainers that it is not about perfection, it is about making progress. And this is so true. I think we often have these high expectations for ourselves, maybe especially when we start something new, and then it is easy to get disappointed and disheartened if it takes longer time then expected. But as with most things in life, it is regular work and practise over time that gives the best results and confidence. Hence the photo here from my instagram account norwegian_lessons, introducing you to the main tenses of Norwegian verb and expressions like hver dag/every day, igår/yesterday, imorgen/tomorrow.
Gratis ressurser / Free resources
In this blog I recommend some great resources you can add to your own Norwegian practice. Last year, ifjor, skrev jeg også en blogg om gratis resurser som du kan bruke for å lære norsk og for å lære mer om Norge, og NRK – Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (Norsk rikskringkasting) er en av de jeg bruker mest. www.nrk.no. Think of abc/sbs/TV5Monde etc. Du kan gå tilbake til januar 2025 bloggen her på websiden min og du vil finne mange forslag (suggestions) til både TV, radio, websider og podkaster in additon to the ones below.
Birgers norskside
En webside jeg anbefaler (recommend) er Birgers norskside. Den har mange forkjellige resurser (different resources). Den er verdt et besøk for alle nivåer – worth a visit for both beginners and higher levels. https://www.bnorsk.no/
Visit Norway
Hvis du liker å reise / If you like travelling, så er Visit Norway glimrende. Her kan du lese på norsk, eller (or) engelsk, svensk, dansk, fransk, tysk, italiensk og spansk om alle steder i Norge. It also gives you a lot of information about culture, food, traditions, public holidays and so on. https://www.visitnorway.no/
NRK: 'Der ingen skulle tru at nokon kunne bo' (Where nobody would believe that anyone could live)
For dere som drømmer om norsk natur og en annerledes livsstil (a different lifestyle) så er «Der ingen skulle tru at nokon kunne bo» (Where nobody would believe that anyone could live) et program hvor du vil møte mennesker som bor langt fra byen, men nærme drømmen om et enklare liv, tett på naturen. https://tv.nrk.no/se?s=der-ingen-skulle-tru-at-nokon-kunne-bu
YouTube: 'Simple Norwegian'
Jeg liker også å anbefale Simple Norwegian på YouTube. Here you will find funny street interviews with Norwegian people about different topics, and they all have subtitles both in Norwegian and English!!!! You will also find excellent grammar videos with all you need to know about nouns (substantiv), verbs (verb), adjectives (adjektiver), pronouns (pronomen) and so on. https://www.youtube.com/@SimpleNorwegian
Nyheter / News
Og til slutt litt om nyheter – and finally about watching some news. Av nyheter er Dagsrevyen 21 (it’s live 9pm in the evening in Norway) et 10–12 minutters nyhetsprogram som kan være en god start for å lære norsk:
https://tv.nrk.no/se?v=NNFA21010626
Og du har også Kveldsnytt, the evening news, som er de siste nyhetene om kvelden, pluss sport og vær. Kveldsnytt varer (lasts) ca 15 minutter: https://tv.nrk.no/se?s=kveldsnytt. If you want the main news program, Dagsrevyen is the longest and most comprehensive news program on NRK: https://tv.nrk.no/serie/dagsrevyen
Debatten is, as the name suggests, a weekly debate program about current topics, sent every Tuesday and Thursday evening, sometimes even more often. You can also listen to this as a podcast if you like.
https://tv.nrk.no/serie/debatten/sesong/nyesteepisoder or https://radio.nrk.no/podkast/debatten
Nytt på nytt is a humorous and satirical weekly program of last week’s news, with 2 new Norwegian guests every week, visiting the panel of the three comedians: Bård, Isalill og Johan. On Friday nights, so Saturday for us in Australia. https://tv.nrk.no/serie/nytt-paa-nytt
Nasjonalbiblioteket became one of my new favourite resources last year. They have many great live streamings and videos about Norwegian history, norse language, sami literature, vikings, gaming and black metal just to mention a few that I know some of you are interested in. Here is a link to their English site; https://www.nb.no/en/ and here is the link to Nasjonalbiblioteket TV where you can watch old and new streamings, and check out the program for 2026. https://www.nb.no/tv/
Til slutt / Final note
